Immediately, Richard Eyre shifts the scenes of Shakespeare’s original work by starting in the common tavern with Prince Harry, more commonly known as Hal, rather than at court with King Henry. His actions effectively change the audience perspective of Prince Harry, Sir John Falstaff, and Harry Percy amongst others, and somewhat shifts the overall reading of the play. Through these distinct decisions, Eyre directs the film in a way that leads the audience to understand Henry IV, Part I differently than it’s original play format. Within the movie, Eyre shifts the order of scenes to reveal a more direct contrast between those which he switches, cuts lines from certain characters to show only the personality traits he wants the audience to recognize, and adds background music to sway the mood and interpretation of specific scenes. The Hollow Crown, a film adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Henry IV, Part I directed by Richard Eyre in 2012, is no exception. The directors of these many productions often change elements of the original works for various reasons, be it personal style or a way to fit the content into a certain time constraint. Nowadays, literary works are brought to both film and television left and right.
